According to her interview with Redbook, Marie Rudisill reflected on the summer of 1946, when Truman Capote, then 22, lived with her and wrote this story. She recalls that Capote was ''very nervous the whole time he was visiting us. That's when he had that first affair of his with [critic] Newton Arvin, when he was writing Other Voices, Other Rooms. One night my husband, Jimmy, and I were sitting in the kitchen, and Truman walked in and said he was going back to New York the next day; then he handed me some papers and said, 'This is for you. I know Bud [Capote's Grandfather] was your favorite and I wrote this story especially for you.' I asked him what he wanted me to do with it. He said, ''Anything in this world you want to do with it-do. Why, someday, I might even be famous.'' Rudisill recalls folding it up and putting it away, rediscovering it in 1984, after Capote's death. Rudisill, with whom Capote lived at various times during his childhood, was called to release Truman Capote's body after his death. Correspondence includes a photocopied letter from Editor Deborah Purcell to Literary Agent Julian Bach, as well as two typed letters signed from Deborah Purcell to Marie Rudisill. Also included is a photocopy of a letter from Attorneys Engel & Mulholland to Julian Bach regarding Rudisill's rights to the story and a photocopy of Rudisill's agreement with Redbook. Also included is a confirmation copy of a Western Union Mailgram regarding Capote after his death. WITH: CAPOTE, TRUMAN; MOSER, BARRY, illustrator. I Remember Grandpa.
