Privately Printed First Edition Of the Tailor Of Gloucester. POTTER, BEATRIX. 1866-1943. The Tailor of Gloucester. London: Strangeways and Sons Printers, 1902. 12mo (132 x 105 mm). 15 color plates including frontispiece. Original pink pictorial boards. Joints starting, some soiling, light spotting to a few leaves. PRIVATELY PRINTED FIRST EDITION, one of only 500 copies of Beatrix Potter's first book after The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902). Like its predecessor, it was issued in a small privately printed edition before Frederick Warne & Co. put out a trade edition in October 1903. The Tailor of Gloucester was Potter's personal favorite of all her books which she always preferred in the earlier printing. The story was based on a legend about a real tailor that she first heard in the home of a cousin in Gloucester in 1897. She sketched the actual locations of the tale for her illustrations.
