Description
Beautiful Emerald with great color and a nice glow. Nice Jardin, which is what the inclusions in Emerald are called, and are nearly always present. Jardin means "Garden" in French, and are unique and are often considered an enhancement, when not overly strong. This stone comes with the pictured GIA certification. This certification alone costs over $125. That alone should be a clear indication of the quality of this Emerald. This emerald would most likely sell in the $1000 per carat range at retail. Let's go through the certificate to explain the details. In the "Treatments" section it says "Clarity Enhanced F2." And in the "Comments" section, it says "Due to their growth conditions in nature and recovery methods, most emeralds contain surface reaching fissures. For this reason, clarity enhancement is a common trade practice." So what does that mean? A surface reaching fissure is a crack that begins somewhere inside the stone and extends all the way to the surface of the stone. These are caused two ways. The first way, as the comments mentions, is from natural grown conditions. This refers to the fact that emeralds get their green color from Chromium, which as an element that generally causes fracturing in gemstones. Second, the report states that recovery methods can also cause fracturing in the stone. This refers to the mining practices that can cause stones to crack when they're extracted from the earth. Because Emeralds have larger fractures in them that extend all the way to the surface, it was discovered hundreds of years ago that if Emeralds are submerged in hot oil, the oil will flow into the some of the cracks and will improve the clarity of the stone. This treatment is called "Oiliing" and has been a standard treatment for Emeralds for hundreds of years. GIA rates the level of oiling from 1-3. This stone has a rating of F2, which is moderate. The geographic origin of this emerald was not requested as the report states, but this emerald definitely has the look of a Colombian emerald. Hope that helps and hope you enjoyed your brief education on emeralds. They really are wonderful stones with a rich history.
