The present work is listed in the artist's account book. Ferneley also painted two other commissions for Dawson, 'Duchess' in 1826, and a bay horse in 1857, which are also recorded. Edward Dawson of Whatton (1802-1859), was Member of Parliament for South Leicestershire from 1832 to 1834, and High Sheriff in 1839. In 1828 he married firstly, Mary Finch, eldest daughter and co-heiress of John Finch Simpson, of Launde Abbey, by whom he had two sons and four daughters.
