A George III carved giltwood torchère Third quarter 18th century The dished circular top supported by carved acanthus leaves on scrolled foliate carved supports and a waisted tripartite plinth base and later carved tortoise feet, 45cm wide x 46cm deep x 107cm high, (17.5in wide x 18in deep x 42in high) Footnotes: Provenance Supplied to the 5th Duke of Bolton (d.1765) for Hackwood Park, and presumably altered for William, 2nd Baron Bolton (1782-1850), thence by descent; Until sold 1935 with Hackwood Park to William Berry (d.1954), 1st Viscount Camrose, thence by descent; Christie's, London, Hackwood Park, 20-22 April 1998, lot 76. Literature The 1905 Hampton & Sons Inventory: 'A pair of 3ft. 6in. finely cut and gilt torcheres on triangular bases with tortoise supports.' The form of this torchère, excluding its plinth and feet, closely relates to torchères supplied in 1763 by Samuel Norman (d.1767) for Petworth in Sussex, precisely when John Verdy's Hackwood interiors were being furnished (see G. Jackson-Stops, Furniture at Petworth, Apollo, May 1977, p.363, fig.16). Originally intended to stand in the corners of a room, the plinth and tortoise feet were probably added during the Regency period, reflecting changing fashions and methods of lighting. The tortoise-foot motif, sacred to Hermes, the protector of boundaries, derives from the feet of a settee illustrated in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (1807, pl. LI).
