A Chinese late 19th century export silver twin-handle trophy Wenwo, Shanghai The twin handles modelled as dragons, with presentation engraving 'Presented to Captain C. Oswald Liddell by Past and Present Members of The Shanghai Light Horse, on his retirement after 18 years membership. Shanghai 29th June 1898' above the body embossed with figural scenes in a landscape surrounding a cartouche with monogram and '1880-1898' and '福祿壽' (fu lu shou, good luck, prosperity, longevity), raised on a knopped and stepped circular spreading foot, height 33cm, weight 39oz. Footnotes: Captain Charles Oswald Liddell was born in Edinburgh in 1851 and moved to China in 1877 for the family business. There, he married Elizabeth Birt in 1880 in the Anglican Cathedral in Shanghai, and inherited Birt's Wharf, expanding the business to Hangzhou, Tianjin and Harbin. In 1915 he was Quartermaster and Hon. Captain in the 1st Battalion, The Monmouthshire Regiment, having served previously (and more adventurously) in the Shanghai Light Horse. The Shanghai Light Horse was a multinational unit of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps (SVC) and first established in the 1850s in order to protect foreign interests in the International Settlement. It was only disbanded in early 1942 following the Japanese takeover of the foreign concessions.
