O'Donovan on reverse, 352 x 355mm., printed by S. Burgess, 8 York Place, Strand, W.C., 1931 (3) Footnotes: The first souvenir in our collection was printed by the firm of Burgess William & Co (advertising themselves as 'Wholesale Export Printers of Souvenir Handkerchiefs'), and the remaining two by Mrs Sarah Burgess, known as 'Auntie' in the trade. The squares were imported from Japan pre-printed with the decorative border for Burgess to add the various commemorative designs in black ink in the central panel, and sold for a penny from street vendors. As well as advertising practical information on forthcoming events, they also acted as tangible souvenirs of Royal occasions although, due to their ephemeral nature, they are unsurprisingly scarce. Sarah Burgess also notably printed similar souvenirs for the demonstrations and processions organised by the suffrage movement of the early twentieth-century.
