A small French purplewood, ebonised, thuya and gilt bronze mounted meuble d'appui in the Louis XVI style Late 19th century, possibly by Guillaume Grohe (1808-1885) The shaped marble top above a frieze drawer and a quarter veneered panelled door centred by a Classical mask enclosing two adjustable shelves flanked by fluted rounded corners on spiral twist tapering gilt bronze feet, stamped 'GROHE A PARIS' to the top of the drawer and the panelled door, 69cm wide x 40cm deep x 95.5cm high, (27in wide x 15 1/2in deep x 37 1/2in high) Footnotes: Grohe was one of the dominant suppliers of luxury furniture in the mid-19th century. He emigrated to Paris from his native Hesse-Darmstadt with his brother Jean-Michel in 1827. They participated in the Exposition des produits de l'industrie francaise in 1831. The brothers worked together under the name of Grohe freres from 1847 to 1861, and after Jean-Michel's retirement, Guillaume ran the company alone until 1884. Grohe was awarded numerous medals and distinctions over the course of his illustrious career, and was considered by his contemporaries to be the finest ébéniste of his day. Perhaps most notably Grohe was made Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1849. His firm supplied King Louis Philippe and then from 1851 onwards, both Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, as well as Queen Victoria, C.
