A French plum pudding mahogany, mahogany and gilt bronze mounted bureau plat Late 19th century in the Louis XVI style, probably by Frédéric Schmit (1830-1880) The rectangular gilt tooled leather inset writing surface with re-entrant corners above a frieze drawer with a gilt bronze mount decorated with trailing foliate scrolls, goats, floral filled cornucopia and centred by a Bacchanalian mask on fluted tapering legs, the inside of the drawer bearing a metallic label stamped 'SCHMIT / EBENISTERIE D'ART, TAPPISSERIE / 22, Rue de Charonne, PARIS.', 125cm wide x 72.5cm deep x 75cm high, (49in wide x 28 1/2in deep x 29 1/2in high) Footnotes: Born in Luxembourg, Frédéric Schmit rose to prominence as one of Paris's leading cabinetmakers in the 19th century, specialising in finely crafted revivalist furniture. Throughout his career, he is recorded as maintaining workshops on the rue de Charonne, at the heart of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris's principal furniture-making district. He was awarded Gold Medals at the Expositions Universelles of 1878 and 1889, and his work was consistently regarded as being of the highest quality.
