A French alabaster and gilt bronze mounted jardinière Late 19th century in the 'Japonisme' style, possibly by Eugène Cornu (1827-1899) The alabaster vase mounted within a pierced and scrolling stand, the top mounted with a pierced edge of alternate masks and acanthus leaves on tripartite supports, 53cm wide x 53cm deep x 63cm high, (20 1/2in wide x 20 1/2in deep x 24 1/2in high) Footnotes: The above jardinière epitomises the French Japonisme style that flourished during the second half of the nineteenth century. Popularised by the influx of Japanese decorative arts to the West during the Meiji period, and further promoted through Japanese displays at the Great Exhibitions, the style adapted and reinterpreted Japanese motifs such as geometric fretwork and flowering lianas. The sculptor Eugène Cornu (1827-1899) was particularly associated with this aesthetic. Owning marble quarries in Algeria, Cornu partnered with the bronzier G. Viot & Cie to produce luxurious objects in marble and alabaster mounted with enamel and gilt bronze, alongside marble vases and fountains. The firm achieved considerable success at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where it was awarded the médaille d'or.
