Art Deco British “Trio of Sporting Bay Hunters” – Bronze Wall Sculpture Plaque, Circle of John Rattenbury Skeaping, c.1925

Subject & Medium
An exquisite British Art Deco cast bronze wall plaque depicting a trio of bay hunter thoroughbred horses in profile, bridled and presented side by side. Each horse is shown quarter-length, their proud heads raised with alert ears and strong necks, embodying the elegance and nobility of the sporting hunter.

Fitted with the original bronze hanging chain for display
Reverse stamped with old foundry number “7156”

Composition & Technique
This finely executed relief demonstrates the Art Deco balance of stylisation and naturalism. The sculptor skilfully captures the subtle anatomy of the horses’ faces: powerful jawlines, flared nostrils, and delicate musculature beneath the skin.

Attribution
While unsigned, the refinement of modelling, anatomical precision, and sensitive treatment of the equestrian subject strongly suggest the circle of John Rattenbury Skeaping (1901–1980).
Skeaping, a Royal Academician and companion of Barbara Hepworth, is internationally celebrated for his animalier sculptures, particularly horses.
During the 1920s–30s, his Art Deco bronzes achieved recognition for their powerful naturalism, elegance of line, and sporting themes, qualities echoed in this plaque.
