PIUS XI: (1857-1939) Pope of the Catholic Church 1922-39 and the first sovereign of Vatican City from 1929. The personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card of the future Pope, unsigned, featuring his printed name (‘Il Cardinale Achille Ratti’) as Archbishop of Milan to the centre and with four lines to text in his hand in Italian, sending thanks for some ‘contested senses’ contained in a letter, apologising that due to a delay in the correspondence he was unable to satisfy a wish, and sending his wholehearted blessings.
