A Harrania tapestry rug in the style of the Ramses Wissa Wassef Egypt, circa 1950 of rectangular form, hand woven in polychrome wool with a pastoral landscape including shepherds, houses, mosques and a herd of donkeys and dromedaries, fringed border to each end 224 x 136 cm. Footnotes: Wissa Wassef (1911-1974) was an Egyptian designer and architect, who, in 1951 opened the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre in Harrania, Egypt. The centre invited local young people from nearby Cairo and its suburbs to learn traditional crafts, including how to weave as early Copts did. Their resultant colourful tapestries have gone on to be exhibited at major international institutions, including the British Museum in 2006.
