Description
French Porcelain Rococo Figure of Neptune,
Edme Samson et Cie, Paris,
Circa 1880
The figure is a stunning example of a Rococo porcelain. Neptune stands on a grassy mound with pink flowers at his feet. He wears a yellow robe decorated with flowers. He holds a ceramic jar in his left arm which is tipping downwards and water is flowing out of it. Behind him is a large green scaled fish with water flowing from its mouth like a fountain. This is traditionally called a dolphin. It's tail and body wrap around Neptune's body. Neptune has a long gray beard and wears a green wreath around his head. The whole figure stands upon a large rococo scroll base highlighted in puce.
Dimensions: 11 1/2 inches high x 5 1/4 inches wide x 4 inches deep (29.21cm high x 13.34cm wide x 10.1 6cm deep).
This figure is based on a sculpture that can be found in the gardens of Versailles. This type of porcelain in the 18th century was made by the Bow factory. This example is was made in France.
Neptune is based on a marble called "L'Eau" by Pierre Legros, which stands at the Fontaine du Point du Jour. But while Legros' sculpture depicts a female, Bow has turned this into the mature, bearded male Neptune, pouring water from an urn. Beside him is a large dolphin in bright colours.
