Description
Rare and characterful piece is a quintessential example of the work of Burlon B. Craig (ca. 1914–2002), a master of North Carolina’s traditional folk pottery. Born in Lincoln County, Craig is celebrated for preserving and elevating the regional craft, particularly after establishing his renowned pottery operation at the Reinhardt farm in Vale, North Carolina. This unique "face jug" is imaginatively fashioned into the form of a birdhouse, complete with an entrance opening. It features the signature aesthetic hallmarks of Craig’s work: a rich alkaline swirl glaze, expressive tile teeth, prominent eyes and nose, and his distinctive, hand-modeled ears. The base is stamped with the maker's name and location, "Vale, NC." Measuring approximately 9 1/2 in. H x 6 in. in diameter, this highly collectible folk art piece is in good condition.
