Description
Exceptional piece of historic Southern folk pottery is a highly desirable five-gallon stoneware churn from Laurens, South Carolina, crafted by the noted potter Joe Johnson. The vessel showcases a beautiful classic alkaline glaze that is wonderfully elevated by a striking, rare cobalt blue decorated ring encircling the upper shoulder. It features a prominent stamped "5" indicating its generous gallon capacity, as well as a highly collectible asymmetrical handle configuration consisting of one hand-applied strap handle and one robust lug handle. Representing a masterful blend of regional utilitarian design and decorative flair. Measuring approximately 17 3/8 in. H x 10 3/8 in. in diameter, the churn is presented in very good antique condition, exhibiting only some expected minor surface abrasions and character-defining chips to the upper lip
