An Opticalman (OM) was a specialized enlisted rating (job) in the U.S. Navy responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of complex optical equipment. The rating was officially disestablished in 1999, with its duties being folded into other ratings such as the Interior Communications Electrician (IC) and Electrician's Mate (EM). Serviced a wide variety of optical tools, including binoculars, telescopes, marine alidades, gun sights, range finders, night vision devices, and submarine/turret periscopes. Because replacement parts were often unavailable at sea, Opticalmen operated lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders to custom-fabricate tiny mechanical components. Handled delicate maintenance, alignment, and grinding of glass lenses. The smallest errors could render the equipment useless.
