Description
A Carved wooden marker post with linear and geometric designs, and a faded face on top. The Giryama people of the Kenyan coast are known for their long-standing tradition of carved wooden marker posts. The posts, called kikangu, serve a number of functions within Giryama life. By honoring the power and presence of koma, or ancestor spirits, these marker posts also fulfill an important role as mediators between the world of the living and the ancestral realm. This post is very well weathered, though some colorful remains of pigments are evident. The Post measures 32 x 4 inches.
