Lyonel Feininger
1871 New York - 1956 New York - "Troistedt" - (1919/1972) Woodcut/paper. 17.2 x 22.1 cm, 18.5 x 23 cm (mount opening). 33.5 x 38 cm (dimensions with frame). Mount. Framed under glass. Slightly foxed in places. - Lit.: Prasse W 192. Posthumous print. Feininger studied drawing and painting at the Berlin Art Academy from 1888-92. He initially worked as a caricaturist before turning to painting. In 1909, he became a member of the Berlin Secession. In 1911, he exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Indépendants and came into contact with Cubism. In the founding year of the Bauhaus, he was called to Weimar in 1919 and directed the printing workshops there until 1925. In 1937, he moved to New York. Here too, he quickly gained recognition as an artist. Feininger received a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 1944 and became president of the Federation of American Painters and Sculptors in 1947.
