Description
Max Liebermann
1847 Berlin - 1935 Berlin - Farmers at the Table - Pencil/paper. 14 x 20 cm (mat opening). 37 x 47 cm (dimensions with frame). Signed lower right: MLiebermann. Mat. Framed under glass (Berlin molding). At the end of the 19th century, Liebermann developed a modern visual language that made him one of the most important representatives of German Impressionism. Influenced by 17th-century Dutch painting, the plein-air painting of the Barbizon School, and the French Impressionists, he preferred to paint atmospherically dense, light-filled park and garden landscapes, working people, beach scenes, and interiors. The mastery Liebermann achieved in oil painting, for which he was honored and awarded, is also found in his numerous drawings and sketches popular with collectors.
