Strawalde, real name Jürgen Böttcher, studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden from 1949 to 1953 and directing at the Academy of Film and Television, Potsdam, from 1955 to 1960. He was one of the most important opposition painters and filmmakers of the GDR and received international recognition after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
