Description
The Smith family business, based in London, was started by Charles Smith in 1799. He was the "engraver to the Prince of Wales" and initially made maps. Later, he created small and portable globes, probably competing with the Cary firm. When his son joined in 1845, their globe making became even more detailed and precise. They are a great example of classic globes, which show great map-making history and quality. In 1870, Smith & Son moved to 63 Charing Cross. Later, George Philip & Son took over the company and kept making Smith globes in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The pair featuring a terrestrial globe and celestial globe was an 18th century proper presentation of the progress in science and exploration .; Saint Petersburg is present , Russian America changed to Alaska , the Chanel of Suez not yet finalized bring us to late 1860 as date of production .; The French finish is a recent restoration , good condition with some oxidation of the paper , all of the map are clear and readable .; H. 20 in. X D.12 inches , the white spot is the reflections on the French finish ( shellac ) .;
