Description
This 19th-century Chinese Altar Cabinet, known as 'The Container 3903' cabinet, is a striking example of traditional Chinese craftsmanship with a rich provenance. Constructed from Northern Elm (Yumu), known for its structural integrity and distinctive grain, the cabinet features traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery and hand-cut dovetail drawers, eschewing modern fasteners for a more authentic construction. The design showcases a beautiful silhouette with clean lines and subtle 'ruyi' scroll carvings, bridging traditional Qing Dynasty aesthetics with Modern Minimalist ethics. It features a raised, cloud-motif apron, elegantly turned 'wing' spandrels, and substantial supports that form the legs and end at upturned 'wing' feet. The cabinet offers versatile storage with two drawers over a double-door cupboard, secured with original pinnacle-style hardware.Originally acquired in the early 2000s as part of a significant wave of Chinese antique imports to the U.S. and later restored in Northern China, this piece has been part of an avant-garde architectural space in Grandview Heights. It is a definitive example of large vernacular furniture. The piece underwent a deep cleaning and preservation process a few years ago. An internal tag with barcode No. 3903 confirms its journey through a high-end import liquidation, and an archival sticker validates its history as a hand-selected piece vetted for the international market. The cabinet was chosen for its excellent design aesthetics and good fortune symbolism.
