His father, also Konstantin Artseulov, was a major general, a ship designer. In particular, it was he who designed the battleships “Sinop” and “George the Victorious” at the end of the 19th century, which served in the fleet of the UNR and the Ukrainian State in 1918. His grandfather, Mykola Artseulov, also served as a naval engineer - he designed the first generation battleships that appeared after the disastrous end of the Crimean War for the Russian Empire. His mother, Zhanna Artseulova, was the daughter of the famous marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky, who lived in Feodosia. With such ancestors, it is not at all surprising that throughout his life Konstantin love for the sea, the sky and painting did not leave him. At the age of 14, after a real school in Sevastopol, he was sent as a hereditary sailor to study at the Naval Cadet Corps, which was located in St. Petersburg. But soon he was expelled due to lung disease. Then Konstantin decided to enter the Academy of Arts, but could not pass the exams. From 1908 he took private lessons from famous St. Petersburg artists. And he also took a decisive step towards his passion for aviation - he became a worker at the Shchetinin factory. There Artseulov received more opportunities to design gliders - this business he had been passionate about since adolescence.Having visited Paris and familiarized himself with the latest airplanes, Konstantin entered a private St. Petersburg flight school and in 1910 in Gatchina made his first flight on an airplane, which was a copy of the French “Bleriot”.After graduating from the flight school, Artseulov received a document stating that he had become the 45th certified aviator in the Russian Empire. After that, he left St. Petersburg and returned to the Crimean shores. There he found work as an instructor at the Sevastopol Aeroclub. But in 1912, when Konstantin turned 21, he was drafted into the army, into the cavalry - to the Crimean Horse Regiment. And then the 12th Belgorod Lancers Regiment, with which he met the beginning of World War I.Artseulov repeatedly wrote reports with a request to be transferred to the aviation unit, but this was only possible in early 1915. With the rank of ensign, he was enrolled as a military pilot in the 18th Corps Aviation Detachment, where he performed combat missions for reconnaissance and artillery fire correction. In 1916, Artseulov went on a business trip to the Moscow plant “DUx” to test the new fighter “Moska”, after which he was transferred to the 8th fighter squadron. Konstantin repeatedly participated in air battles on the South-Western Front, in particular in the Lutsk area. Some sources report 18 air victories for Artseulov, but this is an absolutely incredible figure, since even the best ace of Russian aviation in the First World War, Alexander Kozakov, reliably shot down 17 German and Austro-Hungarian aircraft. In fact, 18 is the probable number of air battles. After the Brusilovsky breakthrough was exhausted in the fall of 1916, and the war again entered the positional phase, Artseulov was sent to the Kachin Military Aviation School to train new pilots. It was there that he was the first in the world to deliberately introduce an airplane into a spin and bring it out of it. After this incident, learning to recover from a spin became a mandatory part of the training of any military pilot. And before that, a spin was considered a deadly phenomenon in flight.During the Ukrainian Revolution, Artseulov managed to visit the ranks of both the Whites and the Reds, because the power in Crimea changed repeatedly. In November 1920, he refused to evacuate with Wrangel's men from the peninsula and remained under Bolshevik rule. He worked as an instructor pilot, tested new airplanes and gliders, which sometimes ended in accidents and injuries. He also took aerial photographs of remote regions of the USSR. At the same time, he never stopped drawing. Some art historians consider his paintings to be part of the so-called Cimmerian school of painting, which also includes artists from the southern coast of Crimea – Ivan Aivazovsky, Maximilian Voloshin.During the years of Stalinist terror, Konstantin Artseulov was repressed. In 1933, he was arrested and exiled to Arkhangelsk. He was rehabilitated only with the beginning of de-Stalinization – in 1956. For the rest of his life, Konstantin focused on drawing – he illustrated the magazines “Technique – Youth”, “Wings of the Fatherland”, “Modelist-Constructor”, and wrote memoirs. Fate gave him a long life: Artseulov died on March 18, 1980 and was buried at the Kuntsevo cemetery in Moscow. Seven years later, a documentary film was made about his life and work – “The Path in the Clouds”.
