Gilbert Rohde, a first-generation American born in 1894 in the Bronx to German immigrant parents, began his career as a cartoonist and commercial artist, later specializing in interiors and furniture. After studying Modern design movements in Europe in 1927, he established his design studio in New York, gaining recognition with notable commissions like Norman Lee's Penthouse.
His success led to collaborations with companies like Heywood Wakefield, Thonet Brothers, and Herman Miller, where his designs contributed to the company's revival during the Great Depression. Rohde's influential work over 24 years solidifies him as one of the 20th Century's design masters. He passed away in 1944 at age 48.
