Description
Mercury glass, or silvered glass, is double-walled glass coated between layers with a silvering solution of silver nitrate and grape sugar, then heated and sealed with metal discs or corks. Unlike mirrors, elemental mercury was never used. Originating around 1840, it was made in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), Germany, and England (1849–1855), with production lasting until at least 1930.
