Signed The Whitehead & Hoag Co. out of Newark, NJ. The "Crusade Commander No. 12 K.T. Penna Medal" was a fraternal medal created by the Whitehead and Hoag Co. for the Knights Templar in Pennsylvania. Exact age is not known. It is a medal emblem - silver tone with oxidation. It is in a shield shape with a knights helmet on top and shield below with a raised knight in the center and a large K on the left and T on the right with Crusade Commander over the knight and below - No. 12 K.T. Penna. It is appx. 2-1/8" tall and 1-1/3 wide. The maker is marked on the back. From the internet: The Knights Templar were introduced to the United States, specifically Pennsylvania, in the late 18th century, with the first Grand Encampment formed in 1794 to unite existing, independent Templar bodies in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Carlisle. Pennsylvania holds the distinction of being the first state to establish a statewide governing body for these Masonic knightly orders, laying the foundation for their organization across America. The Pennsylvania Grand Commandery is a central part of this tradition, and the history of Templary in the state is documented in works such as History of the Knights Templar of the State of Pennsylvania. Good condition for it's age and a historical piece within the Masonic organization.I did not find a duplicate of this - only similar pieces that were bringing over $200.00. I have no knowledge of this piece and spoke with a family member who does as he is a member and has been and did not see one either but estimated the price based on what his knowledge was of these older pieces.
