This Vintage 1950's British Toasting Fork - Arundel Castle is in excellent condition. It measures 19". A little history: Toasting forks have been a part of British culture since the 16th century. Typically used by the upper class, they were particularly en vogue during the Victorian era. What were they used for? Well, as the name implies, the most common use was to toast bread over an open fire, but they could really be used to heat any food item of choice without having to get too close to the leaping flames of the fire. This basic, but important and traditional gadget is referenced in works by Shakespeare, Dickens and many others. In the 1950's, British companies began to make ornamental brass toasting forks - and that's what you see here. They became popular consumer items more used for decoration than function. The top of this piece is formed into the shape of Arundel Castle, a medieval castle located in West Sussex, England. Arundel Castle was established by Roger de Montgomery, the Earl of Arundel in the 11th century! Over the years it has been used in many film and television productions and the grounds have been home to many a cricket match - both local and international.
