  • Description: Vintage Sterling Ruby Cluster Pendant, 3.25" , 1980's-1990's. This has twenty-five oval rubies in slightly different shapes and sizes arranged in a tiered blossom design. They are also bezel-set with an appx. 5.5mm sterling bezel. The center ruby is the largest at appx. 15mm by 12mm. They second or middle tier has a range of ovals that are appx. 12mm by 10mm, but varying slightly. The outher tier has smaller ranging from 8 to 11mm long and 7mm to 8.5mm wide, approximately. These test solidly as ruby and have very thick veiling throughing the stone. I've seen very similar pieces to this listed as natural ruby. They could be lab grown given there are this man rubies in sterling - or they are a lower quality ruby than would be used in higher-end pieces. Lab rubies are not glass - they have the same make-up of a natural ruby but grown in a lab and grown into crystals like natural rubies that get cut into the stones used in jewerly. Just doing an average carat weight calculaton for the twenty-five stones would give his a 72 total carat weight. That is why it is believed these are lab grown or low quality saved for "budget" jewelry making. It has a large swign bail where it is marked .925. I tested the bail adn bezel and they do test as sterling. The total weight of the pendant is appx. 53.92 grams. It is not signed by the maker. Very good condition.
