The Imperial Japanese military used the Type 88 as a standardized impact and short-delay fuze for a wide array of artillery and mortar shells, rather than as an individual weapon. Both the Army and Navy used them for High Explosive (HE) and HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) projectiles.
