This handbill has been mounted.
This Original First Printing Handbill can be extremely difficult to locate. The Trip or Freak is a rare collaboration between three of the most prolific and talented artists of the era: Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, and Alton Kelley. This Handbill was designed for a 1967 Halloween show at Winterland, which featured The Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, and Quicksilver Messenger Service all playing on this night. One of the most demanded Grateful Dead designs of all time. It invited attendees to "Trip or Freak", a lysergic-soaked "Trick or Treat" pun. The image features Lon Chaney in his role in Phantom of the Opera. The background rows are the same image repeated to give the appearance of blotter acid. The script at the top reads Trip or Freak, and upon close inspection reveals a hidden image of a bare-breasted dancing woman. The "C" in "Quicksilver" was mistakenly omitted from the original print. This scarce piece seldom surfaces at public auction or even in private trades, and when it does, it always generates lots of attention.
