Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (Issued by the Gallery) About Artist Esther Oyeyemi is a distinctive contemporary female artist who hails from Ibadan Oyo State Nigeria in April 1995. She's an aptitude artist who discovered her passion for art while in secondary school and from then been practicing using different mediums as a form of expression. She works predominantly with acrylic as she explores the Yoruba mythology of twinhood and the belief that each human has a spiritual counterpart, an unborn spirit double and in the case of twins the spiritual double has been born on earth. Esther obtained a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in 2017 as a certified painter and graphic artist from the revered Emmanuel Alayande College of Education Oyo. Presently, She is a finalist at Obafemi Awolowo University, studying for a BA(Ed). Esther has been privileged to participate in both virtual and actual exhibitions such as the Lasgidi art exhibition, Lagos 2021, and Art Arising virtual exhibition (alliance51) 2021, Emerged as one of the top 100 Nigerian artists that participated in Life in my city art exhibition, 2022. ARTIST STATEMENT: Drawing inspiration from my household consisting of two sets of twins as siblings, I visually document the mythology of 'Ibeji' meaning double birth and inseparable two in Yoruba which stand for ultimate harmony between two individuals. Through a visual narrative and aesthetic language that is meant to reflect and empower African culture, I extend my focus beyond resemblance in appearance with the use of vibrant colors on skin figures to delineate the fraction between societies celebrating twins and rejecting them because of the perception of the twins as powerful spirit. I tend to sensitize my audience to the twin as a powerful metaphor for the dualities within a human being as well as to use the mythology of twinhood to address themes like identity, genetics, demographics, and societal issues.
