Description:This is an excellent view of two nearby towns in Saxony in today's Germany. Halberstadt, which lies in the foothills of the Harz Mountains, is on top and is seen here from the south. It lies between Hanover and Leipzig. The three churches dominating the skyline are (from left) the Romanesque Liebfrauen pier basilica with its four towers, the twin-towered Gothic cathedral of St Stephen and the Gothic three-aisled church of St Martin. Halberstadt became a bishop's see in 814. Three natives stand in fields front of the walled city. The view below is seen from the southeast showing Quedlinburg, which lies southeast of Halberstadt. The castle hill with the three-aisled Romanesque cathedral of St Servatius is on the left. The Bode River is in the foreground with a coach speading through the scene. From Civitates Orbis Terrarum.
