Title: Cape Verde Islands — H.M. ships search for the phantom Bonetta Rock 1839 map Description: Tracks of H.M. vessels Etna & Raven September 1838 in search of the Bonetta Rock'. An Admiralty search chart recording the attempted verification of the so-called “Bonetta Rock,” a reported reef east of Boa Vista in the Cape Verde group. The rock had been variously reported in no fewer than six widely differing positions (marked A–F). In September 1838 H.M. vessels Etna and Raven were tasked with examining these sites, plotting their soundings and tracks across the suspected area. No permanent hazard was found, and the feature was ultimately dismissed as a phantom reef — likely arising from misreported breakers, floating or submerged debris, optical effects, or positional error — and later removed from Admiralty charts. .
