Title: Madeira — Tracks of HM Vessels in search of the [phantom] Eight Stones 1837 map Description: Tracks of H.M. Vessels in search of the Eight Stones [Madeira]. The “Eight Stones” was a reported reef or shoal said to lie north of Madeira, marked on some early nineteenth-century charts. The Admiralty dispatched vessels to search for and fix its position, as shown by the plotted tracks on this chart. Repeated soundings failed to locate any permanent rocks or breakers, and no consistent hazard was found. Like many so-called “phantom shoals” of the period, the Eight Stones likely arose from misreported sightings, errors in longitude, floating debris, or breaking seas mistaken for land. by The Nautical Magazine.
