Description
Rare Late Pyu to Early Pagan Solid-Cast Burmese Monk, 3.25 Inches
A delightful and exceptionally rare solid-cast Burmese bronze figure of a seated monk, dating likely to the late Pyu to early Pagan period. Standing 3.25 inches tall (4 3/8 inches including its custom stand), this small yet spiritually charged sculpture displays the charm, simplicity, and devotional warmth characteristic of early Burmese bronze casting.
The monk is shown seated in a meditative posture with legs neatly folded atop a beaded lotus pedestal. His hands are held in anjali mudra, the gesture of reverence and prayer, and his face carries a gentle, contemplative expression. The solid-cast form gives the figure a pleasing weight and presence, while the naturally aged surface reveals traces of ancient patination consistent with centuries of handling and ritual use.
Bronzes of this type?especially in such complete and well-preserved condition?are very seldom encountered. Its combination of early dating, expressive character, and intimate scale make it an especially rare and special example of early Burmese Buddhist art. An outstanding addition for collectors of early Southeast Asian bronzes."
