Literature
Jane Winter, alias Sarah Wood, a housemaid from Sussex, was convicted of stealing a watch in 1830 and transported to Van Diemen's Land for life. She arrived on the 'America' on 9th May 1831, and her reputation followed her, being described in her gaol report as a common prostitute of bad character. She must have settled down applying to marry William Smith in 1836. Although the marriage application was approved and she received her Ticket of Leave in 1841, records are sketchy as to whether she lived happily ever after with William.
