This piece is extraordinarily well cast by a renowned Paris foundry, Thiebaut Freres, and as such is quite detailed and lifelike. The bronze has a beautiful rich dark patina, very stately and appealing. The sculpture has a nice wood base with an applied tongue-and-dart border. This piece is in excellent condition. The patina is in great shape and the bronze has no breaks and no repairs. The wood base has only very minor surface wear. The bronze is signed for Henri. Pernot and has a small stamp for the foundry, Thiebaut Freres, Fumiere et Cie Successors, Paris. Thiebaut Freres was established by the sculptor Henri-Leon Thiebaut (c. 1846-1899) and was renowned for its fine quality lost-wax bronzes, winning Grand Prix medals at the International Exhibitions in Paris of 1878-1889. This bronze measures about 15 inches tall and has a footprint of about 18 x 11.5 inches.
