About the artist: The son of the artist Benno Adam, he initially intended to devote himself to science, but carried away by the example of his grandfather and uncle Franz, he became addicted to painting and, under the latter's guidance, developed into an excellent master of painting horses, equestrian portraits and hunting scenes.
The first, which he exhibited in Munich in 1861, depicting an Austrian camp scene and met with approval from artists and the public, was followed by two equally successful paintings with figures of horses (in 1863). After their execution, he went to Brussels, where he spent eight months, improving under the guidance of Portals in the depiction of human figures.
On his return to Munich, he was invited with his father to Pardubitz, Bohemia, in 1867, in order to paint a portrait group of 60 of its members for the local noble hunting club. A similar complex painting, containing 40 portraits of members of the Lippspringer hunting society, was executed by him in 1871 for the Duke of Nassau. No less remarkable than these works are many of the equestrian portraits of dignitaries that came out from under his brush and the painting "Hungarian factory horses during the flood" (1881).
