Map 1. Middle Western section. Parts of MT, WY, CO, UT, NV, ID & OR with 7 forts & camps, RRs completed and projected, Indian Agencies, National Park (new Yellowstone). Brigham City & Deseret in Utah. From: Second Report of the United States Entomological Commission for the years 1878 and 1879, relating to the Rocky Mountain Locust, and the Western Cricket and treating of the best means of subduing the locust in its permanent breeding grounds, with a view of preventing its migrations into the more fertile portions of the trans-Mississippi country, in pursuance of appropriations made by Congress for this purpose... An important series of maps that in addition to the subjects stated by the title locates nearly all the forts ever constructed in the Rocky Mountain West. Also all railroads, built or projected. An account of this staggering swarm is found in the Second Report of the U.S. Entomological Commission, published in 1880. By clocking the insects' speed as they streamed overhead, and by telegraphing to surrounding towns, Dr. A.L. Child of the U.S. Signal Corps estimated that the swarm was 1,800 miles long and at least 110 miles wide. This suffocating mass of insects was almost large enough to cover the entire states of Wyoming and Colorado. The swarms were the Rocky Mountain Locust (Melanoplus spretus); the scale of life was beyond our modern experience. The swarm of 1875 was the largest congregation of animal life in recorded history: 2,896 km long and 177 km wide. Ft.
