Goltwurm initially studied in Tyrol and Italy, and from 1539 at the University of Wittenberg under Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon . He then went to Marburg , where he accepted a position as court preacher in 1541 and became court preacher to Philip III of Nassau in 1546. His tenure was interrupted by the Augsburg Interim . He visited Wittenberg again , as well as the University of Leipzig and the University of Jena . After this interruption, he returned to the County of Weilburg in 1548. As superintendent , he conducted visitations of the county's churches and schools and drafted the first church order for the county. He is thus considered the founder of the Protestant NassauWeilburg State Church, a position he held until his death. From 1551 onwards, Goltwurm was also an advisor to Count William of NassauDillenburg , the father of William of Orange , in the implementation of the Reformation in the County of NassauDillenburg. Several of Goldwurm's literary works have survived, demonstrating a clear departure from the allegorical interpretation of scripture in Catholic theology. Based on his conviction that the end of the world was imminent, he interprets inexplicable occurrences as divine intervention in his "Book of Miracles and Signs," compiling miracle stories from historical and contemporary sources.
