Description
68 x 88 This is a mid-20th-century American patchwork quilt top in an unfinished state. The design consists of a large-scale checkerboard pattern featuring solid red and off-white or cream-colored cotton squares. Within this primary grid are multiple inset sections of smaller patchwork blocks. These smaller blocks are constructed from a diverse assortment of vintage scrap fabrics, including floral prints, stripes, polka dots, ginghams, and various calico patterns. The construction suggests a combination of hand and machine piecing. The item consists of the pieced top layer only, without batting, backing, or finished binding. The reverse side reveals the construction process with exposed seam allowances and loose thread tails. Many of the fabrics are characteristic of the 1940s and 1950s era, often associated with domestic scrap or feedsack quilting traditions.
