This Pair of Bristol Hand Blown Blue Glass Vases with Hand Painted Design are in excellent condition. NO chips, cracks, loss of color, or flea bites. They measure 13 1/2" tall x 8" wide x 4 1/2" deep. This pair of vases have all the hallmarks of Bristol (none were back stamped) but are thicker than most Bristol glass. A little history: The glass houses that created Bristol originated in the port city of Bristol, England. As early as the late 18th century the richly colored glass of Brilliant dark blue, dark green, and amethyst could be found in many sizes and shapes, many adorned with touches of gilt. When identifying Bristol glass you can start by holding the glassware in your hand. Bristol glass is lightweight and thin in nature. It is also translucent or a little foggy when held up to the light. Many of the colored pieces will have a fire glow to them when sunlight passes through, this is due to the different oxides added to the glass. The glass will also have a creamy feel to it. On the bottom of the glass you might find a pontil mark (the scar left when the glass is broken from the blowpipe). Higher quality pieces will usually have its pontil ground and polished smooth. In the late 19th century many of the vases were frosted and adorned with nature motifs such as birds and flowers. The decorating of the glassware was called cottage art because the glass was sent out from the factory to women in the surrounding villages to be hand decorated. This is why there are hardly any two alike. Sometimes you will find a number painted on the bottom, some believe these numbers could identify the decorator.
