Description
This Pair of 17" tall Japanese Showa Period Kutani Bird Statues are in excellent condition. NO chips, cracks, color problems etc. Very hard to find one let at least a pair of these birds. The base measures 8 1/2" x 5 1/2". These are not common and will certainly add to any oriental collection.
A little history: Items sold as Kutani also know as Kang-style wares, are from the 19th century. The colors used include a brownish red, muddy yellow and intense green, on a greyish ground. Many different porcelain products were made, mostly for western market, including tea and coffee sets, dishes, bowls, incense burners and decorative items.
The Showa era is named after the reigning Emperor of the time: Hirohito, whose regnal name or "?? (gengo )" was Showa. He occupied the throne from his ascension in November 1928 up until his death in 1989, marking the longest reign of the modern Japanese Emperors since the Meiji Restoration.
