Fitzwater was the Deputy Press Secretary for President Ronald Reagan and took over from Larry Speakes who in turn was standing in for James Brady who was shot during an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. Although incapacitated Brady retained the titular title of Press Secretary during the duration of Reagan's presidency. He served as Press Secretary for President George H Bush
