Description
One of 53 privately held. Signed by the Assistant Commissary General 'Affleck Moodie.' Lowes arrived in Hobart in 1823 as a free settler and established a distillery in 1824. He was politically active and in 1824 he "was a signatory to a memorial to the King soliciting separation of Van Diemen's Land from New South Wales and its independence as a colony" ADB. Signed on back Thos Y Lowes. An 1830 Third of Exchange for a £100 Commissariat Note issued at Hobart Town, Van Diemen’s Land (Australia). The document is payable to T(homas) Y(ardley) Lowes of His Majesty’s Treasury, Whitehall, London. Exchange notes of this type were used by the British colonial administration to transfer and settle government funds between the Australian colonies and Britain. The piece is presented in Extremely Fine details condition.
