Description
The Oil painting on Hardboard titled "The Wisdom of the Priest" presents a deeply dignified and reverent portrait of an elderly man, likely a clergyman or sage, whose serene yet penetrating gaze conveys the gravity of a life lived in devotion, thought, and spiritual depth. The viewer is immediately drawn to the central figure, whose long flowing white beard and silver hair frame a face marked by calm authority, inner strength, and timeless wisdom. His expression is solemn, yet it carries a subtle softness-a quiet reminder that true wisdom comes not only from knowledge and experience, but also from compassion and humility. The figure is dressed in a dark robe, the folds of which are depicted with careful attention, suggesting the heavy simplicity of religious or monastic attire. Around his neck hangs a striking medallion, suspended on a golden chain, that serves as both a literal and symbolic focal point of the painting. The medallion is ornate, adorned with jewels, and it bears an icon of a holy face-perhaps Christ, rendered in miniature detail. This sacred symbol underscores the man's spiritual vocation and elevates the portrait beyond that of an individual to one of universal devotion, wisdom, and the eternal pursuit of truth. The artist has chosen a dark, subdued background, a stylistic decision that enhances the solemn presence of the figure. The muted tones of brown and deep green create a timeless atmosphere, enveloping the man in an aura of introspection and silence. The darkness of the background contrasts sharply with the brilliance of his beard and hair, which almost glow against the shadows, reinforcing the metaphor of light as wisdom, shining through the obscurity of worldly concerns. The subtle gradient of the backdrop draws attention to the subject's face and medallion, ensuring that the focus remains entirely on the essence of his presence rather than on any surrounding distractions. The treatment of the face is particularly masterful. The artist has captured the depth of his eyes with precision, painting them not as simple features but as windows into the soul. There is a piercing intensity in his gaze, softened by a sense of patience and resilience. His slightly furrowed brow hints at a life of contemplation, challenges endured, and truths wrestled with over many decades.

About the artists: Alexander Gukalov
After graduating from Lviv Polytechnic, he was engaged in scientific work. In his free time, he studied the works of Plato, the poetry of the ancient East, and religious works. At this time, resistance to the routine of life and utilitarian science arose in him; he became interested in man and his secrets. Alexander decided to end his engineering career and become a humanitarian. Since 1990, he began to write and publish philosophical poems. Later he decided to devote himself to painting, a passion for which began during his years of study at the Lviv Polytechnic with caricatures and caricatures of classmates and teachers.
Since 2017 he has been painting with oil paints. Alexander does not have a formal art education, but he is convinced that the craft and talent of an artist do not directly depend on professional education. The artist's works are characterized by completeness of composition and depth of meaning. He is not afraid to work with different themes, his paintings are true modern art that touches people. The artist's portfolio includes landscapes and views of his favorite cities, portraits of pop stars, politicians, athletes, relatives, and animals. "I draw a toga when I feel the need for it. Therefore, I cannot say that I work in some narrow direction. Rather, it is a call from the soul," the artist says about himself.
