Partially printed true copy of 1798 bail piece from the New-York Mayor?s Court, recording the legal release of Thomas Stilwell into the custody of his sureties, James Hazard and the legal placeholder "John Doe." It reflects a "Plea of Trespass on the Case" (a common civil lawsuit of the era) brought by Charles Hagben. The document is historically significant as it is signed by Jacob De La Montagnie, a prominent New York Alderman and judge, and certified by Clerk Robert Benson. On the Verso is the attestation of the surrender of James Hazard, signed by La Montagnie, Fine condition, measures 6.5 x 8.
