Description
Victorian Biblical Narrative Oil Painting"Daniel in the Lions' Den:, Signed and Dated 1881
Attribited to Isaac Findler (British, 1809-1888)
Subject and Medium
A striking and atmospheric Victorian religious narrative dated 1881 oil painting on canvas depicting the celebrated biblical story of Daniel in the Lions' Den, traditionally attributed to the Staffordshire artist Isaac Findler (1809-1888).
The composition portrays Daniel seated calmly upon a rocky outcrop within a shadowy wilderness setting, surrounded by lions yet remaining unharmed through divine protection. Clad in a vivid crimson robe, Daniel gazes heavenward in prayer and contemplation, conveying a profound sense of faith, devotion, and spiritual resilience.
Executed in oil on canvas and dated 1881, this impressive nineteenth-century biblical painting captures one of the most enduring narratives of the Old Testament. Rich in symbolism and religious significance, the work possesses both devotional character and considerable decorative appeal. The dramatic contrast between the illuminated figure of Daniel and the dark surroundings creates an arresting visual presence that immediately draws the viewer into the scene.
Composition and Technique
The artist demonstrates a thoughtful understanding of narrative composition, placing Daniel centrally within the picture while using the surrounding lions to create both visual balance and dramatic tension.
The restrained palette of deep browns, warm earth tones, and rich blacks allows the vibrant red robe of Daniel to become the dominant focal point. This use of colour not only enhances the visual impact of the work but also symbolically emphasises Daniel's spiritual importance within the composition.
Particular attention has been paid to the facial expression of Daniel, whose calm and contemplative gaze contrasts with the alert presence of the lions. The artist's use of strong chiaroscuro creates depth and atmosphere throughout the painting, while the dark woodland backdrop enhances the sense of isolation and divine intervention.
The work displays many of the qualities associated with Victorian provincial religious painting, where storytelling, emotion, and moral narrative were often prioritised over strict academic precision. As a biblical narrative painting, it successfully combines dramatic storytelling with a powerful message of faith, courage, and divine protection.
Historical Context
The story of Daniel in the Lions' Den originates from the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament and remains one of the most powerful narratives of faith and perseverance within Christian tradition.
According to scripture, Daniel was condemned to be thrown into a den of lions after refusing to abandon his devotion to God. Through divine intervention, the lions did not harm him, and he emerged from the den unharmed. The episode became a symbol of unwavering faith, courage under persecution, and ultimate spiritual triumph.
During the nineteenth century, biblical paintings such as this enjoyed immense popularity throughout Britain. Religious art was frequently displayed in private homes, schools, chapels, and public institutions, serving as both decoration and moral instruction. The subject of Daniel in the Lions' Den was especially admired for its dramatic imagery and inspirational message.
Works depicting biblical narratives were collected not only for their decorative qualities but also for their moral and spiritual significance. Today, Victorian religious paintings remain highly sought after by collectors who appreciate their storytelling, symbolism, and historical connection to nineteenth-century faith and culture.
About the Artist
Isaac Findler was born in 1809 and lived in the Staffordshire village of Cheddleton near Leek. Although employed professionally as a house painter and decorator, he developed a reputation as a talented local artist producing landscapes, religious subjects, and sign painting.
It is believed that Findler dedicated increasing amounts of time to painting after his son assumed responsibility for the family decorating business during the late 1860s. He became known throughout the region for his distinctive and often highly individual artistic style.
In 1874 he held a public exhibition of his work in Leek, and examples of his paintings remain preserved within regional museum collections. Significantly, an earlier depiction of Daniel surrounded by lions painted by Findler in 1846 is held by Staffordshire County Museum, demonstrating the artist's longstanding fascination with this biblical narrative.
The present painting, dated 1881, would therefore represent a mature work executed during the latter years of his artistic career.
