This rare J.H. Merrill Saddle Ring Carbine is chambered in .54 caliber black powder and features a 22-inch barrel with a 13.5-inch length of pull. The carbine retains its desirable saddle ring and is in good mechanical condition. The metal surfaces exhibit scattered pitting consistent with age and military service, while the wood shows honest signs of use and wear but remains solid. The bore is dull in color with age-related black powder corrosion and wear consistent with long-term use and storage.
Designed by James H. Merrill, the Merrill Saddle Ring Carbine was one of the distinctive breechloading cavalry carbines used during the American Civil War. Approximately 14,000 were produced, with many seeing service in Union cavalry units. The Merrill's unique breechloading action allowed for faster loading than contemporary muzzleloaders, making it a respected cavalry arm of its era. Original examples are considerably scarcer than other Civil War carbines and are highly sought after by collectors of American military firearms.
